Glitch in iPhone 14’s crash detection sends automated SOS alerts
Due to a bug in the iPhone 14’s crash detection capability, the Pitkin County 911 Center in Colorado received about 20 automated emergency calls. The Grand Country also said the malfunction was the cause of roughly 30 calls every day. Apple responded to Pitkin County by saying that the fix is being developed and will likely be available in the first quarter of 2023.
Shipments of ‘made in India’ smartphones declined 8% YoY in Q3 2022
52 million made-in-India smartphones were shipped in the September quarter, an 8% year-over-year (YoY) decline. Around 7 million of the 52 million cellphones that were shipped during the period were exports. Oppo, a Chinese smartphone manufacturer, had the highest market share for Made-in-India shipments during the quarter at 23.8%, followed by Samsung (20.7%) and Vivo (12.4%).

U.S. House members are now barred from using TikTok on government devices
Lawmakers and staffers are forbidden from installing the popular app TikTok on any mobile devices provided by the House and are asked to delete the app. The Senate, where some senators including Marco Rubio, R-Fla., have asked for the app to be fully banned in the United States, is exempt from the House’s instruction.

A total of 17,989 employees were fired by 52 companies in industries including e-learning, consumer services, e-commerce, health technology, logistics, fintech, enterprise technology, media and entertainment, agri-tech, and cleantech. 15 edtech companies— Byju’s, Unacademy, Vedantu, Byju’s-owned WhiteHat Jr. and Toppr, Practically, FrontRow, Lido, Invact Metaversity, Yellow Class, Teachmint, Lead, Udayy, Crejo.fun, and Eruditus —were responsible for almost 44% of the layoffs.

The digital platforms Ola, Uber, Dunzo, PharmEasy, and Amazon Flex received the lowest ratings for offering gig workers fair working conditions. These five companies received a score of 0 out of 10 in the Fairwork India Ratings 2022 Report, which evaluated platforms in accordance with five principles: fair pay, fair conditions, fair contracts, fair management, and fair representation.
Esports get official recognition from Government of India
Esports have now been included in India’s “multisports event” category by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. It has also been added to the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology’s “matters relating to online gaming” section. The Indian government is now debating how to regulate online gambling in India. A task force was established to look at this issue.
Kinetic Luna is returning as electric mopeds
The electric Luna will target customers in the low-tier market and the load carrier sector as an all-electric last-mile transportation option. The company developed the main frame, main stand, side stand, and swing arm as well as all of the other basic subassemblies for the E-Luna, and set up a dedicated production line with an initial capacity of 5,000 units per month.
Class action filed against FTX by customers to claim dwindling assets
The lawsuit requests that the court rule that funds kept in FTX Trading accounts for non-U.S. clients and in FTX U.S. accounts for U.S. customers are not FTX property. The complaint also states that the customers want the court to specifically rule that any property held at Alameda that may be linked back to customers is not Alameda property.
Flipkart’s $700 million cash payout to benefit 25,000 former and current employees
Out of the $700 million payout, the top 20 Flipkart employees—the company’s most senior and early hires—will receive up to $200 million. In contrast to a normal equity/ESOP buyback, Flipkart’s one-time cash distribution involves employees receiving the compensation as part of a PhonePe transaction rather than employees selling their options to the firm.
India likely to spend $21 billion on digital ads by 2028
By 2028, it is projected that the robust ecosystem of 2.5 to 3 million creators will support marketing expenditures of $2.8 to 3.5 billion. Due to macroeconomic considerations, the country’s digital advertising expenditure is expected to expand slowly in FY23. However, after that, it is expected to account for 65–70% of total advertising expenditure in India, growing at a CAGR of 19–21%.
