The ChatGPT mobile app’s net revenue first jumped 22% on the day of the GPT-4o launch and continued to grow in the following days, according to Appfigures. On Tuesday, net revenue was up to $900,000, nearly twice that of the app’s daily average of $491,000.
The ChatGPT mobile app earned $4.2 million in net revenue across both the App Store and Google Play from May 13 to 17, which represents the largest revenue spike the app has seen to date (via).
What does this mean?
That people want to pay for voice features (even though there will be free version available soon) is a big testament that the future of AI UX isn't chatbot.
As I said earlier, voice interaction is the next frontier for AI. Just as smartphones revolutionized the way we use mobile devices, voice-driven AI experiences will redefine how we interact with technology.
With voice, AI agents can understand not just the words we say, but also the tone, emotion, and context behind them.
Note that even though Indian startup ecosystem is good at taking inspiration from Silicon Valley successes, there hasn’t been a single AI companion app (they are the biggest consumer apps wave globally) for the Indian market (i.e. local language support).
There are hardly any LLMs which are trained on local dialect (though my guess is that we are a few weeks away from this..as some like Pranav Mistry are working on these LLMs and Deepgram’s in-house models are..just fine for now, though I am not sure of the active roadmap).
The future, as always is exciting and if you are somebody who is exploring voice + AI, do connect with me (ashish at nextbigwhat.com).
